Can t engage rear pto

In the last week or so, I have been unable to engage the rear PTO on my TC-33 (185 Hours). It has always been difficult to engage but now I can move the handle full forward with a gread deal of effort but it is obvious that the linkage is giving and nothing is actually moving. Has anyone else had this problem - any solutions?

This one isn't sounding good and I hope the tractor is under warranty.

My Ford 1710 is sort of a distant uncle to your TC. I don't know how similar the TX's are but mine is forward to disengage. Once out of engagement, the lever pretty much has free-travel back and forth from the engagement point to full forward. I tend to engage mine at idle rpm and if it's reluctant, I 'tickle the clutch.' If it's still cranky and I'm in 4wd, I lift the front wheels with the loader. If it continues to be cranky I know it's time to adjust the clutch linkage. I have a two-stage clutch and live PTO but no mid-pto. PTO's shouldn't have to be forced to engage them.

All of this doesn't do you much good now. As far as I know the travel on a gear pto lever should be pretty free and if it never was it probably always had a problem. Some of the linkage on mine would be accessible without a major tear down but a split is required if the problem is something like bent shift rails. As far as I know there is nothing to adjust on my PTO linkage. ....

I crawlerd under there today and removed the cotter key and the linkage.

With the linkage removed, I can put a pipe wrench on the shaft that engages the PTO and rotate it fairly easily to engage the PTO.

The linkage when disconnected moves freely. I've always thought the linkage was flimsy. I'm guessing that it the rod isn't perfectly straignt, it can flex instead of putting downward pressure on the cam that rotates the shaft.

A decent ray of hope it seems. It also sounds like TC and 1710 TX's are different. On mine the only parts outside the cases are the shift lever, shaft end, guide, a gasket and o-ring. The sifter mounts to the sheaf with a roll pin. A cotter key does sound flimsy. There'd be some potential on mine for a buggered o-ring or guide to cause such a problem.

If it comes to removing covers for some reason, my repair manual warns that some parts on the TX cover may drop off the cover and into the TX unless care is taken. That is likely true for many TX's since safety switches are often mounted on the top-covers. ....
